Solar with EV Charger

With solar panels and an EV charger for your present or future electric car, you can eliminate fossil fuels both at home and on the road. With solar panels and an EV charger, you could be able to drive on sunshine.

FAQ's

Common Massachusetts
Solar Questions

The Hardware: Solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity, which an inverter turns into AC power for your home.

The Grid Connection: Most systems are "grid-tied," meaning you stay connected to utilities like Eversource or National Grid.

The Financial Loop: Massachusetts uses a "stackable" model. While Net Metering lets you bank credits to offset your bill, the SMART 3.0 Program pays you a fixed, monthly cash incentive for every kWh your panels produce for 10 years, regardless of whether you use that power or send it to the grid.

Battery Integration: Adding a battery allows you to participate in ConnectedSolutions, where you earn annual payments (often over $1,000) for allowing the utility to use your stored energy during peak summer events

Solar energy is a clean, renewable energy source that fosters energy independence and the creation of jobs locally. You are assisting your state in achieving significant objectives to increase the amount of renewable energy on the grid by switching to solar power. Solar power is dependable, silent, and increases the value of your home without raising your property taxes.

Yes, but the ownership model matters. While homeowner-owned systems are no longer eligible, Solar Leases and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) remain eligible for the 30% federal credit through 2026. This allows you to go solar with $0 upfront cost while the provider passes the tax savings to you through lower monthly energy rates.

Yes. Although the 30% federal tax credit for homeowner-owned systems ended in 2025, Massachusetts incentives remain some of the strongest in the country. Homeowners still benefit from a $1,000 state income tax credit, 20-year property tax exemptions, and 6.25% sales tax exemptions. Most Bay State households still see a break-even point within 7–10 years due to high utility rates.

The SMART 3.0 Program provides monthly cash incentives based on how much electricity your solar system produces. Who receives those payments depends on how the system is owned.

For homeowner-owned systems, SMART payments are issued directly to the homeowner by the utility.

For Solar Leases and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), OneGrid receives the SMART incentive and applies its full value to the customer through lower, fixed energy rates rather than separate incentive checks.

This structure allows customers to benefit from SMART 3.0 even if they don’t personally receive tax credits or incentive payments.

Net metering is the backbone of your savings. When your panels produce more electricity than your home needs, the excess is sent back to the grid, and you receive credits on your utility bill. During the night or on cloudy days, you use those credits to offset the power you pull from the grid, often resulting in a near-zero electric bill.

ConnectedSolutions is a "virtual power plant" program where your utility pays you an annual incentive, often exceeding $1,000 per year, for allowing them to draw a small amount of power from your battery during peak demand events. Enrollment also makes you eligible for 0% interest financing for your battery through the Mass Save® HEAT Loan.

While not strictly required, battery storage is becoming a central part of Massachusetts solar strategy. A battery protects your home during New England winter outages and qualifies you for the Mass Save® ConnectedSolutions program, which pays you for sharing stored power during summer peak events.

OneGrid handles everything from system design and permitting to installation and inspection. Our technicians mount the panels safely, connect them to your home, and test everything to ensure peak performance.

You are not have to, but you can. There are other ways to pay for your system, such as tax refunds, solar incentives, direct financing, and more. Obtaining a free consultation is the only way to learn what is available to assist you in paying for solar.

Absolutely. Your home remains connected to the grid for nighttime use, or you can add battery storage to use the excess energy your system produces during the day.

No problem! OneGrid offers professional solar removal and reinstallation services. We’ll safely remove your panels, coordinate with your roofer, and reinstall them once your roof is ready.
